Pop Kaun Web Series Release Date, Storyline, Cast & Crew, Wiki, and OTT Platform
The comedy genre in Hindi cinema has not received the respect it deserves despite classic filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Priyadarshan creating characters that still make us laugh on multiple viewings.
Unfortunately, Farhad Samji’s filmography doesn’t do the genre justice. However, the good news is that Pop Kaun? only has six episodes, each with a decent runtime.
The show explores the topic of “real pop kaun?” but fails to tickle the audience’s funny bone consistently. Despite this, the show does have some funny moments thanks to the talented cast, including some of India’s most celebrated comedians.
The actors’ sheer mastery of comedy helps land a few jokes, even if they are somewhat outdated. However, the cast’s talent also highlights the show’s missed potential, as they are unable to save the show from its overall lackluster execution.
The storyline of the Pop Kaun Web Series
Farhad Samji, who has directed Bollywood comedy films such as ‘Houseful 4’, makes his OTT debut with ‘Pop Kaun’. The show is a comedy-drama that follows Sahil (Kunal Kemmu), the son of politician Brij Kishore Trivedi (Johnny Lever), who frequently name-drops his MP ancestor by saying, “Janta Nahi Mera Baap Kaun Hain.”
However, just before getting married to his love Pihu (Nupur Sanon), the daughter of Karam Biswajeet Chaupala aka KBC (Saurabh Shukla), Sahil discovers that Brij Kishore is not his biological father and sets out to find his real father, resulting in a crazy journey.
The show has six episodes, and while it has a few funny lines that produce laughs, the topic of “real pop kaun? (Who is the real father?)” is dragged out over multiple episodes with similar situations.
The first episode is quick and amusing, but as the story progresses, it becomes repetitive and dragged out to the point where viewers may feel the need to fast forward.
Certainly, the performances of the late Satish Kaushik, Saurabh Shukla, Johnny Lever, and Rajpal Yadav, who are known for their impeccable comic timing, are the saving grace of the show.
Kaushik leaves a lasting impression with his final performance as Dr. Qatar Singh, while Kunal Kemmu gives an earnest performance but fails to leave an indelible impression.
Nupur Sanon looks promising in her OTT debut but is overshadowed by these legendary actors. Jamie Lever, on the other hand, steals the show in every frame. Overall, ‘Pop Kaun’ has its moments of humor, but only at intervals because most of the jokes are forced, and even the intentional comedy becomes unfunny quite early in the show.
With such a talented cast, a laugh-riot was to be expected, but these six 30-minute episodic series fall short on that front.
